Notley Tythe Barn wedding, starring Ian the beer donkey

Meet Ian the Beer Donkey – The Most Popular Guest to photograph at Notley Tythe Barn.

I recently had the absolute pleasure of being the wedding photographer at a beautiful wedding at the stunning Notley Tythe Barn, a countryside venue full of character and charm. But what truly stole the show during the drinks reception was a four-legged guest named Ian.

Let me introduce you to one of the most unexpected and delightful additions to a wedding day: Ian the Beer Donkey.

Ian is no ordinary donkey. With a gentle temperament and an adorable face that instantly wins hearts, Ian arrives with a custom-made harness packed full of chilled bottles of beer, ready to treat your guests. He’s led and lovingly looked after by Ruby, a dedicated handler who ensures Ian is happy, safe, and very well-fed (carrots are his currency of choice!).

As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen a lot of creative ideas for personalising a big day – but Ian was a first for me. Not only did he bring smiles to every guest he met, but he was also more than willing to pose for photos. Whether it was couples, kids, or the entire bridal party, Ian stood proudly, soaking up the attention and striking his best pose – usually in exchange for a snack or two.

Ian’s story

But Ian’s story adds an even more heartwarming layer to his presence. He had a rough start in life and was once a resident at a donkey sanctuary in Wales. Thankfully, he was rescued by the team at Notley, where he’s now found a forever home full of care, affection, and the occasional party appearance. Today, Ian enjoys a peaceful life at the barn, with the added bonus of charming wedding guests during his one-hour cameos.

Wedding inspiration

If you’re planning a wedding at Notley Tythe Barn, Ian can absolutely be part of your day. His appearance is carefully managed—he’s always accompanied by a handler, stays for about an hour during your drinks reception, and then heads back to his stable for a well-deserved rest.

And if you’re not getting married at Notley but you’re still looking for something a little quirky, heartwarming, and unforgettable to wow your guests? Let Ian be your inspiration. Whilst he is exclusive to Notley and doesn’t travel to other venues (he’s a bit of a local celebrity, after all), there are similar ideas popping up across the UK and beyond. A quick Google search for “beer burros” might just lead you to an equally adorable donkey who can carry drinks and delight guests at your chosen venue.

Unique wedding touches like this are what make your day truly memorable – for you, your guests, and even your photographer. I’ll definitely never forget Ian and the joy he brought to this wedding.
