Every wedding has those unforgettable moments that guests talk about long after the day is over. Sometimes it’s an emotional speech, a packed dance floor, or a surprise performance â and sometimes, it’s a donkey named Ian carrying beer.
As a Surrey wedding photographer, I’m lucky enough to photograph weddings filled with personal touches and unique moments, but this wedding at Notley Tythe Barn in Buckinghamshire brought something I hadn’t experienced before â and it quickly became one of my favourite wedding moments to date.

The Unexpected Star of a Notley Tythe Barn Wedding
Nestled in the Buckinghamshire countryside, Notley Tythe Barn is one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the South East. With its beautiful 12th-century barn, stunning grounds and relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect setting for couples planning a romantic countryside wedding.
As a documentary wedding photographer, I love venues that allow the day to unfold naturally, and Notley Tythe Barn does exactly that.
During drinks and canapĂŠs, guests were introduced to Ian â and it’s safe to say he instantly became the most popular guest at the wedding.
Ian arrived wearing his custom-made harness filled with chilled bottles of beer, ready to deliver drinks while collecting plenty of attention along the way. With his gentle nature and incredibly photogenic face, he quickly became surrounded by guests wanting photographs, cuddles and, of course, a chance to say hello.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen plenty of creative wedding ideas over the years, but Ian definitely brought something unexpected to the day.
More Than Just a Wedding Guest
What made Ian even more special was hearing his story.
Ian had a difficult start in life and was previously cared for at a donkey sanctuary in Wales before eventually finding his forever home at Notley Tythe Barn.
Today, he enjoys life surrounded by care, affection and the occasional wedding appearance â spending an hour charming guests before heading back to his stable for a well-earned rest.
And whilst carrots may not officially be part of the package, they definitely seem to help win him over.
